Summer Hikes on the Oregon Coast: 3 Things You Need to Know

Hiking along the Oregon Coast can be incredibly rewarding. From exceptional views of the Pacific Ocean to densely forested hideaways, coastal trails offer an experience you won’t want to miss when you visit the coast. You can find trails for all skill levels, too, meaning there’s something for everyone.

Of course, with any hiking adventure, it pays to be prepared. The Oregon Coast is home to spectacular natural wonder—and it’s home to nature’s unpredictability. Don’t Forget your trusty rain hats or sun hoodies, as you may find yourself at odds with the elements. This summer, as you plan your next Oregon Coast adventure, here are a few tips to help you stay ready for anything.

The Weather in the Morning Can Be Very Different From the Afternoon

The weather along the Oregon Coast can take you on a roller coaster ride of outdoor conditions. The early to mid-morning hours might be rainy and cloudy, with a chill in the air. But, as noon approaches, the rain and mist can give way to brilliant blue, sunny skies and much warmer temperatures. On most summer days, the temperature can hover anywhere between 60 to 80 degrees. It can be highly variable.

To prepare for dramatic changes in weather throughout the day, layering can be essential. If you plan on hiking, you’ll want those layers to be as lightweight as you can get them. You might start an early-morning hike wearing a rain shell over a light insulated vest and a sun shirt. You may also want a rain hat (or at least bring one in your backpack). These layers allow you to mix and match as the day goes on. That way, you’re prepared for any coastal weather scenario.

The Sun Can Be More Intense Than You Might Expect

When the sun comes out along the Oregon Coast, it can be brighter and more intense than you might expect. It’s easy to underestimate the intensity of the coastal sun. One reason why—especially during the summer—is because it can feel cool and breezy when you’re spending time outdoors near the ocean.

Be ready for the tricky coastal sun with all the sun-protective essentials. This can include sunglasses, a full-brimmed sun hat, a sun hoodie, a sun shirt, and hiking pants or shorts made with UV-blocking fabric that has a UPF rating. And don’t forget the sunscreen! Apply sunscreen before heading out and store it in your pack so you can reapply throughout your hike.

Coastal Trails Can Be Wet and Muddy

The Oregon Coast can be a wet place. For those unfamiliar with hiking along the Oregon Coast—or anywhere along the Pacific Coast—it’s easy to go in unprepared for just how wet and muddy it can be. Between foggy and rainy conditions (especially in the morning), you may also find yourself contending with sea mist.

Trails nearer to the ocean or that face the ocean can be wet and muddy. If you’re hiking along densely forested trails, you may also encounter moisture from grass, trees, and underbrush. These are all great reasons to pack rain hats, rain jackets, and possibly even waterproof rain pants, depending on the forecast. You can also rely on waterproof hiking gaiters to help keep debris and water out of your boots or shoes.
