There are 96 “fourteeners” in the United States. These are mountains that reach or exceed 14,000 feet above sea level. If you’re an avid hiker, love the outdoors, or enjoy pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, chances are a few of these peaks are on your bucket list.
Whether you live in Colorado or are planning a trip to Alaska, once you’ve set your sights on the mountain you want to climb, it’s time to start preparing. Here are four tips to consider before summiting peaks above 14,000 feet.
Up Your Training Regimen
Summiting one of these peaks is a huge accomplishment and certainly one that’s earned. After all, 14,000 feet is the equivalent of nearly 50 football fields. Throw in steep elevation gain, rocky terrain, and alpine conditions, and it’s easy to understand why summiting a fourteener is a badge of honor.
You want your greatest hike to take your breath away figuratively, which is why building your cardiovascular endurance and strength training is key for a safe and enjoyable hike. Increase your training regimen at your own pace, and give yourself plenty of time to acclimate to the exertion it will take to reach the top.
Do Some Research
Mountains are like fingerprints—no two are exactly the same. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a relatively new outdoor enthusiast, research your route ahead of time. When you’ve done your due diligence, you’ll be better equipped, have realistic expectations, and know how to keep yourself and others safe.
Here are a few things to research about the trail you choose:
Trail conditions
Recommended experience level
Weather forecast
Ideal month to hike
Dress for Success
The mountain may not be a runway, but what you wear can make or break your experience! Wearing functional, durable outdoor gear is the best way to stay comfortable and protected on the trail. Protective gear—such as durable hiking gaiters designed to keep moisture, debris, and other elements out of your shoes—can help you stay on track and reach the summit.
Bringing additional layers is the best way to prepare for chilly mountain air and unexpected weather changes. Wear breathable, moisture-wicking clothing, and opt for a lightweight, waterproof outer layer.
Double Up on Sun Protection
Air is thinner at high elevations, and that means the sun’s rays can be more powerful. Even if you’re expecting cloud cover on the big day, wear protective clothing and reapply sunscreen when you need it.
Wearing a sun shirt made with lightweight, breathable material that offers UPF protection is an excellent choice. Use sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher for any exposed skin, and you’ll have all the protection you need to enjoy your hike while staying cool.
Drink Water and Pack Snacks
Be sure to bring at least two liters of water with you to stay hydrated and energized. Packing tasty, high-energy snacks is important for fueling your body as you hike. Remember, even though it’s sure to be tough, this is a fun, fulfilling experience! Pack a fun treat, like your favorite bar or another easy-to-carry snack, to enjoy as you take in the breathtaking views from the top.
Summiting one of these incredible mountains will fill you with a sense of accomplishment, offer unparalleled views, and ignite your sense of adrenaline. With these four tips and an adventurous spirit, you can enjoy a truly unforgettable experience.
